How To Choose The Best DJ

The music at a wedding and the reception is absolutely integral to the vibe and, well, to simply put it, the level of fun you and your guests will have. According to post-wedding interviews, done by us and by other wedding publications, more than three-quarters of brides, grooms, and guests say that music is one of the most memorable parts of the wedding. Think about any wedding you’ve ever attended. What was for dessert? Odds are that information isn’t at the forefront of your mind. But, we’re guessing that you clearly remember that moment when Aunt Susie broke it down in the middle of the dance floor.

The point is, music at a wedding shouldn’t be dropped down the priority list while planning a wedding. That being said, there are a few things you should pay attention to while searching for the right wedding DJ to meet your event’s needs.

DO SOME PRE-PLANNING Before you can choose the right wedding DJ, you first have to determine what your needs are for your event. Do you want a full band, a solo DJ, an intricate light display, the works for a multi-day event? All these questions need to be answered before you can choose the right wedding DJ. Pre-planning will help establish an appropriate budget for the entertainment, as well as giving you an idea of what you realistically need. Once you decide what entertainment options you want at your wedding, you can start the search.

BE REALISTIC Sometimes people hear DJ and think it’s simply a guy plugging in an auxiliary cord into his MacBook. Good DJing is exponentially more complex than that. If you want your cousin who’s been “spinnin’” for a few months, then sure, it’ll be a cheap couple hundred dollar deal, but you may get an… interesting mix (and maybe a story you really don’t want to tell). There are also DJs who boast they have all the “newest” and “highest tech” equipment and focus almost entirely on that. Don’t be surprised when these guys charge close to five figures to do a simple wedding. While the new equipment may be nice, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are the best DJs. So what makes for the best DJ? The great wedding DJs want to do weddings — it’s fun for us and, at least at Nice, we love seeing people happy. So, in your search, ask the DJ questions like, “How did you get into this business?” or “What’s your favorite part about being a wedding DJ?”. If you get a sense they’re just in it for a paycheck and nothing else, then maybe look elsewhere.

HAVE FUN AND DON’T SETTLE Planning a wedding shouldn’t all be stress and aggravation. Finding a wedding DJ can, and should, be enjoyable. Ultimately it’s about fun music, so look around, ask for example mixes or YouTube links to previous shows. Ask your potential DJ to meet you for a cup of coffee so you can establish a relationship before the event. Or, check if the DJ will have showcases where you can hear him/her live. The bottom line is, the more of a connection you have with your potential DJs, the better you can gauge how good of a fit the DJ will be for your wedding. Just don’t settle!

IT’S YOUR CHOICE At the end of the day, it’s your decision on who you pick to DJ your wedding. If you have a gut feeling one way or the other, then you should seriously consider it in your decision-making process. The best choice is not always the cheapest or most expensive, but the one that will make you feel comfortable on your big day. Oh, and one that will make you dance. A lot.
